Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter, SC 29412
On April 13, 1861 Fort Sumter was surrendered to the Confederate army. Before handing over the fort, Major Robert Anderson ordered his men to perform a traditional 100 gun salute. Unfortunately, on the 47th shot, a gun misfired and killed a union soldier named Daniel Hough. It is believed that Hough's spirit never left Fort Sumter. To this day visitors swear they encountered his apparition walking about the area. Other visitors claim to smell gunpowder and then there are the few who can discern the face of Daniel Hough in the faded area just to the right of the center star on the Fort Sumter flag.
