Room 8 at this inn is said to be haunted, along with room 10. In room 8, guests have reported being woken up in the middle of the night by an apparition that is described as being a headless torso. A scandalous ghost is said to haunt room 10, and apparently likes to get in bed with the lady guests. There are a number of other ghosts who have been spotted on the grounds as well.

  • Headess Torso Ghost Room 8

In 2008 I visited Charleston, and booked room 8 at the Battery Carriage House Inn. I asked for room 8 after seeing a television show on which a man described his experience with the Headless Torso Ghost. Late at night my husband and I sat up in bed, and I turned on my small cassette tape recorder. I spoke out loud asking the ghost to appear to me. I told him I realize he may not have a head, but if he could and wanted to, he could communicate with me. I also asked him not to touch me, or to be right up in my face when I woke up, as that would frighten me. My husband fell asleep fairly quickly, but I sat waiting and watching for probably over an hour. Suddenly a few feet away, between the foot of our bed and the door, I saw a smoky looking grayish mass forming. It was surrounded by a glow of what looked like something electric, and appeared to be popping like static does when you walk across carpet and touch a door knob. As the static danced around it, the mass seemed to be becoming more compact. As it did so, it would get darker and darker. Then it seemed to lose some of its intensity, and would spread out a little, and become lighter gray again. I looked around the room, trying to determine if what I was seeing could be just an illusion caused by some kind of light coming through a crack in the window shades or something, but I couldn't see anything that could be causing it. It was about knee high off the floor, and about three feet high, and maybe 2 1/2-3 feet wide. It seemed like I was watching for a long time but it was probably only about a minute or two, and then it was just suddenly gone. The next morning I told my husband I'd seen something, and before I told him what I'd seen he said he'd seen something too, and he pointed to where I'd seen the mass. He said that he'd gotten up in the night to go to the bathroom and when he was walking by that area of the room he'd seen this dark thing, and then he went on to describe exactly the same thing I'd seen. I saw what I saw probably about 1:30am. He saw it again about two hours later. I listened for any voices on the cassette tape, but unfortunately, other than myself talking, I heard nothing.
