The Grey Man of Pawley's Island

Unable to save his own life, the grey man spends his afterlife protecting people from tragic fates. The grey man will most often appear prior to a hurricane. In this way, he attempts to persuade people to move inland or get off the island. Survivors of tragic storms have recounted tales in which the grey man appeared and warned them of the impending storm.
